The thrill of intense fear, a jump-scare followed by feelings of relief, is precisely what sensation seekers are hoping for in a great horror film. Fortunately, lovers of the horror genre will not have to wait until October, as some of the biggest releases are coming out this summer. PROVOKR showcases exciting debuts, sequels, and original stories to get your fill of chills and thrills.

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest project, Old, arrives on July 23, 2021. The graphic novel Sandcastle inspires this supernatural, psychological fantasy horror thriller by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters. It follows a family on a tropical holiday who discover their secluded beach is causing them to age rapidly, reducing their lives into a single day. It stars Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, Alex Wolff, Embeth Davidtz, Thomasin McKenzie, and Eliza Scanlen.

The Night House is a psychological horror movie directed by The Ritual and V/H/S director David Bruckner. The film stars Rebecca Hall as a widow who starts to uncover her late husband’s secrets following a series of hauntings at the lakeside home he built for her. After seeing the film at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, one reviewer wrote, “The Night House is a standout film… It’s moody and atmospheric, but, but above all, it’s scary as hell.”  The film is scheduled for release on August 20, 2021.

A Quiet Place 2 is the sequel to 2018’s A Quiet Place. Following the deadly events at home, the Abbott family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence. Forced to venture into the unknown, they quickly realize the creatures that hunt by sound are not the only threats that lurk beyond the sandy path. Directed by John Krasinski and stars Emily Blunt, the film is now in theatres and streaming on Paramount+.

False Positive, Hulu’s latest flick is being hailed as a modern take of cult classic Rosemary’s Baby. Ilana Glazer’s character Lucy was dying to get pregnant until she fears her baby might be trying to kill her instead. It also stars Justin Theroux, Pierce Brosnan, Sophie BushFalse Positive streaming now on Hulu.

In theaters and on-demand, Till Death is Megan Foxs’ return to the horror genre following her cult film, Jennifer’s Body. After a romantic evening in their secluded lake house, Emma (Megan Fox) awakens, handcuffed to her dead husband. Trapped and isolated, she must fight off the hired killers to escape her husband’s twisted plan.  

Written by Jason Carvey and directed by Scott Dale, the cast also includes Eoin Macken and Callan Mulvey.

Candyman is a direct sequel to the 1992 movie of the same name. It stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Colman Domingo, and Tony Todd. The slasher film is directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele. Chicago’s Cabrini towers were torn down years ago, but the legend of a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, can be summoned by repeating his name five times to a mirror, is still alive. In the present day, artist Anthony McCoy (Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend Brianna (Parris) move into Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition. Anthony meets a Cabrini Green old-timer who exposes him to the tragic and horrific nature of the true story behind the Candyman. Anthony begins to explore the details in his studio but unknowingly opens the door to a complex past that unravels his sanity and unleashes a wave of violence. The film is set to arrive in theaters on August 27, 2021.

Film censor Enid (Niamh Algar) takes pride in her meticulous work, guarding unsuspecting audiences against the effects of watching the gore-filled decapitations and eye gougings she pores over. Her sense of duty to protect is amplified by guilt over her inability to recall details of the long-ago disappearance of her sister, recently declared dead in absentia. So when Enid is assigned to review a disturbing film from the archive, she begins to unravel how this eerie work might be tied to her past. Censor is now in theaters with an on-demand roll out on June 18, 2021.
