Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of the Louisa May Alcott classic, Little Women, is set to come out December 25, 2019. Little Women tells the story of the four March sisters who live in Massachusetts in the 1860s. In anticipation of its release, get to know its star-studded cast.
Emma Watson as Meg March
This British actress first came to prominence as a child actor as Hermione in the Harry Potter series. She soon proved she was more than just a wizard with roles in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower and the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Beauty And The Beast. Watson will be portraying the oldest of the March sisters, Meg, who is described as the one who takes care of everyone when their mother is away. She strives to live up to society’s ideals of what a woman should be.
Saoirse Ronan as Jo March
She wowed us with her Oscar-nominated performance for Best Supporting Actress in Atonement when she was only 13-years-old, which was later followed with two Oscar nominations for Best Actress in the films Brooklyn, and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird. This Irish actress will be stepping into the role of Jo March, the second March sister. Jo, in contrast with her older sister Meg, is described as tomboyish and hot-tempered with a sarcastic sense of humor.
Eliza Scanlen as Beth March
Hot off the heels of her breakthrough performance as Amy Adams’ sister in the HBO miniseries, Sharp Objects, this Australian actress will be making her feature film debut in this film. Scanlen will be playing the role of the third March sister, Beth. Beth is described as the shyest of the March sisters. She is the peacemaker of the family and while her sisters are all excited to leave home and lead their own lives, Beth is content to stay.
Florence Pugh as Amy March
You know her from her breakthrough performance in Lady Macbeth, which she followed up with Outlaw King and Midsommar. This British actress will be taking on the role of Amy March, the youngest of the 4 March sisters. Amy is described as the most self-centered of the March sisters, most likely due to being coddled as the baby of the family. She is also a talented artist.
Laura Dern as Marmee March
Laura Dern has been acting since the 70s. She became famous with roles in the David Lynch classics Blue Velvet and Wild At Heart as well as Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. She now wows audiences in her role on HBO’s Big Little Lies. Now, Dern will be stepping into the role of Marmee March, the mother of the 4 March sisters. Marmee is described as a charitable woman who lovingly raises her daughters.
Meryl Streep as Aunt March
This actress needs no introduction, is there anyone who isn’t familiar with the inimitable Meryl Streep? She’s been nominated for a total of 21 Academy Awards, of which she has won 3. Notable for her roles in Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie’s Choice, The Devil Wears Prada and so much more, this mega-star will be taking on the role of Aunt March. Aunt March is a wealthy widow who lives in a mansion. Jo and Amy take turns helping her.
Timothée Chalamet as Theodore ‘Laurie’ Laurence
And finally, you know him as Elio, the teen discovering himself and his sexuality in the Oscar-nominated coming-of-age Call Me By Your Name, and also as Saoirse Ronan’s sort-of boyfriend in Gerwig’s Lady Bird. Timothée Chalamet has teamed up with Ronan and Gerwig again to play Theodore “Laurie” Laurence, Laurie is the March’s neighbor and a good friend to Jo.
