Set in the mid-19th century on the American East Coast frontier, two couples must contend with the hardship and isolation they face. Things start to change as the two frontier women grow closer and begin to fall for one another.

While both couples are childless in the isolated landscape of Schoharie County, in Upstate New York (although actually shot against a bleak Romanian landscape). Abigail (Katherine Waterston known to audiences as American witch “Tina Goldstein” in the Fantastic Beasts franchise) and Dyer (Academy Award winner Casey Affleck, who was also a producer for this film) are grieving the loss of a young daughter.

Their new neighbors are Tallie (
Vanessa Kirby of last year’s Pieces of a Woman, and an Emmy nominee as Princess Margaret in Seasons 1 and 2 of Netflix’s The Crown) and the controlling Finney (Christopher Abbott of Martha Marcy May Marlene, and a Golden Globe nominee for Hulu’s Catch-22).

The World To Come is the 2nd feature directed by Mona Fastvold, following her 2014 Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominated drama, The Sleepwalker (which featured Abbott). In between the two films,  Fastvold penned the screenplay for The Childhood of a Leader, directed by her husband Brady Corbet.

The screenplay was co-penned by Ron Hansen (the novelist of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which was adapted into the Affleck film) and writer Jim Shepard. It is based on Shepard’s short story of the same name.

The film scooped up the Queer Lion after preiming at the Venice Film Festival last fall.

The World to Come was released on February 12, 2021, and is now available for streaming.
