THE GETTY KIDNAPPING!

Michelle Williams in a true crime thriller

In 1973, the world was stunned by the kidnapping of J. Paul Getty III, the 16-year-old grandson of John Paul Getty, not just the richest man in the world, but the richest man in the history of the world. A notorious scrooge, the billionaire oilman announced to the press that he would not pay the $17 million ransom to the Italian mob that snatched his favorite offspring, resulting in a horrific, violent outcome to this family drama.

In All the Money in the World, the movie version of this twisted tale of greed and publicity chaos, Kevin Spacey stars as the misery Getty who distrusts everyone, including his closest relatives. He even suspects his grandson of having planned his own kidnapping for his own profit. Michelle Williams plays Paul’s strong-willed but penniless mother, Gail, “not a real Getty,” she explains, “I just married one,” who teams up with a security advisor (Mark Wahlberg) in this race against time to save her son.

Directed by Ridley Scott, who knows his way around intense, edge-of-your-seat thrillers (Blade Runner, Alien, Gladiator), it also stars up-and-comer Charlie Plummer, 18, who’s been impressing us in shows like Boardwalk Empire and films like this year’s family drama, The Dinner.

All the Money in the World opens December 8th.
