THE INVISIBLE MAN
Elisabeth Moss is Driven Mad by a Specter

You may be familiar with H.G. Wells’ classic horror novel, The Invisible Man (not to be confused with Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man), which tells the story of a scientist who makes himself invisible, but is unable to reverse the effects. He resorts to a life of crime, but you’ve never seen him (pun intended) like this. In this adaptation of Wells’ story, Elisabeth Moss is Cecilia, a woman who inherits a fortune when her abusive ex-boyfriend, Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), supposedly commits suicide. Suspecting his death was a hoax, Cecilia’s haunted by an invisible assailant, whom she believes to be her ex. With her sanity in question, Cecilia must determine who or what is haunting her to save herself and loved ones as well.
The trailer introduces us to Cecilia, who is told that Adrian slit his wrists because of heartbreak. He dies and leaves her five-million dollars. She will get the money as long as she is ruled mentally competent. Cecilia is wary as she had to escape from Adrian’s controlling grasp. She does not believe he would kill himself. Given the film’s title, the odds are that she is right. Adrian’s whole game is just another chapter in his long history of abusing Cecilia. Likely spurned by her leaving him, he decides to drive her crazy by becoming invisible. Hopefully, Cecilia can bring him down for good.
This movie was originally part of a Universal Pictures reboot of Universal Monsters and would fall into a shared Dark Universe. Johnny Depp was to star as the titular ghost. The reboot of The Mummy, in 2017, was set to be the beginning of this Dark Universe. After the film opened to poor reviews, the shared universe idea got scrapped. Instead, Universal will still remake these monster movies, but as standalone projects. In 2019 it was announced that Jason Blum, of Blumhouse Productions would produce the film, which would be written and directed by Leigh Whannell. Johnny Depp is no longer involved in the production.
The Invisible Man comes out in theaters on February 28, 2020.
