In The Last Letter from Your Lover, Felicity Jones plays Ellie, a young journalist living in present-day London. While looking through her paper’s archives, she comes across a series of love letters written in the 1960s by star-crossed lovers Jennifer Stirling (Shailene Woodley), the wife of Laurence Stirling (Joe Alwyn), a wealthy industrialist, and Anthony O’Hare (Callum Turner), a journalist writing a piece on Laurence. As Elliepores through the letters that detail the intense affair, she becomes determined to find out what happened to Jennifer and Anthony. Along the way, Ellie finds herself drawing closer to her colleague Rory (Nabhaan Rizwan), who decides to help her track down the two former paramours.

Augustine Frizzell (Never Goin’ Back) directed the film from a script co-written by Nick Payne (Wanderlust) and Esta Spalding (On Becoming a God in Central Florida). It is based on Jojo Moyes’ romantic novel of the same name. This is not the first novel by Moyes to be adapted for the big screen, her romantic drama Me Before You was turned into a movie in 2016 starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin. If The Last Letter from Your Lover is anything like Me Before You, be sure to have your tissues handy and expect to cry a lot.

A trailer was recently released for the film, and while it doesn’t give too much away, we can come to our own conclusions about what happened to the two lovers based on a couple of clues. Firstly, about halfway through the trailer there is a dramatic car crash, that could mean that either Jennifer, Anthony, or both got seriously injured. It could also have been a crash that involved Jennifer’s husband. But, if you notice in the cast section on the film’s wikipedia page, Diana Kent is credited as playing older Jennifer, and Ben Cross as older Anthony. No actor is listed as an older version of Laurence. Of course, readers of the novel probably know the answer, but for those who didn’t, you’ll just have to wait and see.
