Set in a post-apocalyptic future, The Midnight Sky follows Augustine Lofthouse (George Clooney), a scientist living alone in the Arctic. He must work fast to stop Sully (Felicity Jones) and her fellow astronauts from returning to a global catastrophe at home on Earth. While the film’s themes may feel a little too familiar to many, it was completed before the coronavirus pandemic and the California wildfires. The event that led to Earth’s destruction in the movie remains a mystery.

A trailer was recently released for the science-fiction flick and offers a glimpse of what we can expect. In the trailer, we meet Clooney’s Augustine, who believes he is the last man on Earth until he meets a child named Iris (Caoilinn Springall). With no one else around, he takes the little girl into his care. At the same time, Sully and her fellow astronauts are aboard a NASA ship called Aether. They have been trying to get in contact with Earth but to no avail. The astronauts decide to return to find out what is going on. When Augustine discovers that Aether is on its way back, he has to trek across the Arctic with Iris to an antenna strong enough to connect with the ship.
