Maggie Q is Anna, a highly skilled assassin hell-bent on revenge in the upcoming action thriller The Protégé. So why is she on a quest for vengeance? Moody (Samuel L. Jackson) — her childhood savior after he found her amidst the rubble of a massacre in Saigon, raised her, taught her, and brought her along as he traversed the world — has been murdered. However, as she embarks on her search to bring the perpetrator, or perpetrators, to justice, she finds her life becomes intertwined with the mysterious and equally lethal Rembrandt (Michael Keaton). And no, we do not mean the famous Dutch painter who died in 1669; presumably, Keaton’s Rembrandt is using a pseudonym.

You may be wondering, just how exactly do Q’s Anna and Keaton’s Rembrandt’s lives become intertwined? Do we mean that in a sense that he plays a part or knows something in regards to Moody’s demise? Yeah, but do we also mean intertwined in the biblical sense? You bet we do. At least, if the trailer is anything to go by, it looks like things get pretty hot and heavy for these two. And honestly, could you blame them? Yeah, they’re both deadly assassins probably out to kill the other, but hey, they’re hot, and who doesn’t love their action flicks with a heaping side of sexy? Yes, we would be slightly remiss if we didn’t point out the age gap between 41-year-old Maggie Q, and 69-year-old Michael Keaton, making him only three years younger than Samuel L. Jackson, who plays her father figure. But hey, Keaton’s still got it!

New Zealand director Martin Campbell (behind The Mask of Zorro and James Bond franchise entriesGoldenEye and Casino Royale) helmed the action flick from a script written by Richard Wenk (the pen of the Denzel Washington vehicleThe Equalizer). The cast includes Robert Patrick (of the Terminator franchise), Patrick Malahide, David Rintoul, Ori Pfeffer, Ray Fearon, and Caroline Loncq.

Lionsgate will theatrically release The Protégé on August 20, 2021.
