Who doesn’t love a good sci-fi film? They’re always a great way to escape reality, and honestly, we can’t get enough of them. Here are three upcoming science fiction movies that are sure to excite.

Ad Astra

Another addition in the terrors of space travel genre, Ad Astra stars always irresistible Brad Pitt as Roy McBride, an astronaut who travels to the edges of our solar system in the hopes of finding his father (Tommy Lee Jones), who went missing while on an expedition 30 years earlier. What he discovers along the way threatens the very nature of human existence. The film was directed by James Gray, from a script he co-wrote with Ethan Gross. In addition to Pitt and Jones, the film stars Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland. Ad Astra premiered to positive acclaim on August 29, 2019 at the Venice Film Festival. It will be released theatrically on September 20, 2019.

Lucy in the Sky

Lucy in the Sky was directed by Fargo and Legion’s Noah Hawley, from a script he wrote with Brian C. Brown and Elliott DiGuiseppi, so you know you’re in for a bit of a trip. The film centers on Lucy Cola (Natalie Portman), an astronaut who returns to earth after a long mission. Back on earth, Lucy begins an affair with another astronaut, as she begins to lose her grip on reality and her lover starts seeing a trainee, all hell breaks loose. Apparently, this film is loosely based on the real criminal activities of former astronaut Lisa Noawk in regards to her lover, William Oefelein. The film also stars Jon Hamm, Zazie Beetz, and Dan Stevens. Lucy in the Sky will premiers on September 11, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival, and then will be theatrically released on October 4, 2019.

Underwater

As the title would indicate, this is not a movie about astronauts. Underwater centers on a crew of underwater researchers whose lives are thrust into peril when an earthquake destroys their undersea lab and releases some sort of sea beast. Aliens under water? The film was directed by William Eubank from a script written by Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad. Underwater stars a hopefully wet Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr., Mamoudou Athie, T.J. Miller, and Gunner Wright. Underwater is scheduled to be released on January 10, 2020.
