This summer Wonder Woman will shatter the glass ceiling in more ways than one. Not only is this the very first female-led superhero movie—out of 50 films (!) in the genre in the last 10 years—it’s also the first in the DC Extended Universe to be directed by a woman. Patty Jenkins has the pedigree for this girl-power project: her first film, Monster, which garnered Charlize Theron her Oscar for Best Actress in 2004; and she also earned a DGA win for directing the pilot of the female-driven TV series The Killing.

The origin story of Wonder Woman begins on the all-female island of Themyscira where we meet Diana Prince, the Amazonian warrior princess with a few superpower tricks up her magical bracelets. Played by a former Miss Israel contestant who also served in the Israel Defense Forces, Gal Gadot is the perfect Wonder Woman combo of sexy and tough—and what more could you ask for in the iconic character? If the thrill-ride trailer is any indication, Wonder Woman will set the stage perfectly for November’s all-star team up, Justice League. Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2nd,
