Winfried and Ines Conradi are a German father and daughter: he’s a retired music teacher with a predilection for assuming the false identity of “Toni Erdmann” and horsing around with people; she’s a tough, efficient businesswoman living in Bucharest, Romania. Much to Ines’s chagrin, her dad comes to visit her to reconnect, but he does it as Toni Erdmann and—whether he’s trying to or not—messes up her life. This comedy, written and directed by Maren Ade (The Forest for the Trees; Everyone Else), was a prize-winner at Cannes and generated lots of buzz at the Telluride, Toronto, New York and London film festivals this fall. Toni Erdmann opens in theaters this December 25. Check out the trailer, above.
