When he was 21 years old, 21 Savage started rapping.

That was just seven years ago, in 2013. Soon after, the rapper scored a spot in the top 25 of the Billboard 200 with his first EP, Savage Mode. The nine-track collection was a collaborative effort alongside everyone’s favorite rap producer Metro Boomin. It was self-released on SoundCloud in 2016 and soon regarded as one of that year’s best rap albums. Savage Mode wasn’t his first release, but it was the beginning of 21 Savage’s career.

The musical sequel to that phenomenal debut has finally arrived. Savage Mode II dropped in early October, and fans have been going wild for it ever since.

Of course, this musical revival features Metro Boomin’s production on every track. Before its release, 21 Savage published a trailer for the album narrated by Morgan Freeman. Expectations were high. How would Savage Mode II compare to the first album? Would it have the same brooding energy and banging production? Could a single compare to the fan-favorite “X“?

When the album dropped on October 2, no one seemed disappointed. Savage Mode II debuted atop the Billboard 200. Fans are listening, helping track after track climb the Billboard charts. Critics have raved over it, asserting that the album is “a worthy successor” of the first Savage Mode

The album is 16 tracks long and includes features by Drake and Young Thug, two additional popular rappers. Freeman returns sporadically to add narrative bits to various tracks. 21 Savage’s deep rhyming is steady and serious, while Metro Boomin’s production talent is on full display with every beat.

Savage Mode II will surely be one of the top rap albums of the year. Though it won’t be eligible for the upcoming Grammy Awards, we’ll be waiting to see if it receives any other accolades before the year’s end.
