Against The Current

And Their New Heartbreaker “Strangers Again”

BY: Rudie Obias

Hailing from Poughkeepsie, New York, Against The Current broke out into the music scene in 2016 with the release of their debut album In Our Bones for Fueled By Ramen Records. The album brought the young band instant worldwide appeal, especially in Germany, South Korea, Argentina, and Japan, while their sophomore follow up is due out sometime this year.

To get fans ready for the new album, Against The Current released two new singles “Almost Forgot” and “Strangers Again,” which also has an accompanied music video featuring the band’s lead singer Chrissy Constanza finding herself caught inside of a glass prison.

Directed by Emmy Award-winner Kyle Cogan, the video has a dark and neon look to it, almost as if it were set in a sequel to Tron: Legacy. Constanza is inside the triangled-shaped box, but is desperate to break free and join her bandmates Dan Gow (guitar) and Will Ferri (drums) on the other side.

The themes of the video compliments the song itself, which is about staying in a relationship that isn’t working anymore. It’s that bitter realization that you just want to go back to being “strangers again.”

“I can’t stand it when you touch me like that
‘Cause it just reminds me of the nights that I spent
Telling myself it was fine
But now I’m over that
I think it’s better if we just pretend
We’re just strangers again”

I love a good dose of “Emo” in my daily diet of music and this single is strong with its vivid and vibrant imagery. It almost has a Taylor Swift meets Dashboard Confessional or American Football tone to it with its themes of freedom and self-actualization.

Moreover, “Strangers Again” would be a good compliment to American Football’s iconic “Never Meant” single from 1999. No matter what the feeling, it proudly wears its emotions on its sleeve. But that’s the whole point of Emo music, right?

The untitled album, which has been described as, “new musical directions while remaining true to their characteristic sound” — has yet to receive a release date. “Almost Forgot” and “Strangers Again” are now available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud.

Against The Current is also on a world tour later this year in a number of countries, such as Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and France, and of course, the U.S. — in support of Fall Out Boy.
