With her husky, bluesy voice, Alison Mosshart is the kind of singer who always commands the stage (as she did in this video from the windblown stages of Coachella last month). She’s also a prolific songwriter—by her count she’s written about 120 over the past few years—some of which will be released on June 3, when she and her The Kills bandmate Jamie Hince release their fifth album, Ash & Ice. “Writing a record is always a long journey. It’s scary, it’s painful,” Mosshart has said. “You have to wait for ideas sometimes, or force yourself down uncomfortable paths. We just keep searching, creating, scraping, reworking, rediscovering, shifting, forgetting, discussing [and] not sleeping. Until we get there.” When she’s not recording or on stage, Mosshart puts that same kind of energy into painting. In fact, she had her first solo show at New York’s Joseph Gross Gallery last year. It’s Mosshart’s captivating presence and her fearless approach to indulging every aspect of her creative spirit that makes her a quintessential PROVOKR girl crush.
