Ari Lennox Whips It Up

R&B Singer Delivers Cutting Blow on Whipped Cream

It’s been three years since D.C. native Ari Lennox signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records. In that time, the 27-year-old R&B singer has been featured on a collaborative album Revenge of the Dreamers II, and released her debut EP Pho in 2016.

Lennox’s latest single, “Whipped Cream,” is a passionate ballad about an ex whom she can’t seem to get off her mind. Part longing and part bitter nostalgia, “Whipped Cream” is an open letter to her former lover that paints a tender yet unflattering image of said ex.

One of our favorite parts of Lennox’s single is her ability to create beautiful, rhyming lines whose sentiments are anything but. For instance, we’re pretty sure “Your deceivin’, receivin’, non-givin’ head ass” is one of the greatest ways to tell someone that they’re not the best in bed we’ve ever heard. As a general rule, songs about the aftermath of breakups aren’t tunes we usually enjoy, but we can’t help but love how succinctly Lennox cuts her former lover down to size. On top of being an amazing takedown of a lover who treated her poorly in the past, the catchy melody of “Whipped Cream” is undoubtedly an ear worm that we’ll be coming back to us time and time again.

That being said, we sincerely hope that Ari Lennox finds a way to enjoy making music again, as we’ve heard reports that she is contemplating giving up on music. Both for her own happiness, as well as our selfish desire to hear more amazing music from the gifted young musician, we hope that’s not true.
