When Forbes magazine released their “30 Under 30” tally of trailblazers shaking up their industries in 2016, 17-year-old Shawn Mendes was on the list. The Canadian singer—who first got noticed by posting videos of himself performing on Vine—continues to own the mantel as “the new Justin Bieber.” In 2015, Mendes released his first album, Handwritten, featuring the song “Stitches,” which catapulted into the top 5 on Billboard‘s Hot 100. Mendes is currently on a world tour promoting that album. When Forbes asked the singer when he first realized he could have a full career as a singer, Mendes answered with typical humility. “Maybe yesterday,” he said. “Seriously, I’m 17, the way I keep myself sane is by thinking of it as fun.”
