This is a deeply personal one! The newest music video for Demi Lovato’sTell Me You Love Me” features the singer’s passions and fears with a soulful search for love and acceptance.

The single from Lovato’s sixth studio album explores the highs and lows of taking a risk with love. The music video, directed by Mark Pellington, doubles as a short film about a young couple getting married, only to discover that they’re not ready for such a big commitment from each other.

Co-starring the handsome Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy), you can really feel the passion between the two characters, all while they slowly grow apart. Overall, it’s wonderfully filmed and rings true to Lovato’s inspiration for working on the song and the concept behind the music video.

“At the time I was going through a breakup. It’s about the vulnerability of coming out of a very serious relationship and having a tough time with it,” said Lovato during a pop-up event in New York City in September 2017. One can only assume that she’s talking about her ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama. They were a couple since she was 18 years old but ended their relationship in June 2016. Lovato explained to the BBC, “It said exactly what I was wanting to tell that person. I wanted to hear them tell me that they loved me.”

The short film displays a sense of intimacy that you really don’t see in music videos from other pop stars. And along with that sense of closeness comes a sharp feeling of loneliness and vulnerability. Demi Lovato is wide open in “Tell Me You Love Me” and that’s very bold and daring.

Tell Me You Love Me” is now available on iTunes and Spotify.
