Girl Crush: Tinashe
The singer is ready to dominate the charts

Singer-songwriter Tinashe—who, lately, has been getting a lot of tabloid attention for hanging out with Calvin Harris—has far more on her mind than worrying about rumors about her romantic life. After her 2014 debut album, Aquarius, announced her as a musical force, Tinashe spent most of 2015 opening up for Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry on their tours, all the while taking mental notes about what it takes to become a first-rate headlining act. “[Nicki]’s just exceptionally confident and unapologetic, and I like that about her,” said Tinashe. And Katy Perry? “Her outfits and her screens and her lighting, it’s just so next-level that I’m like, ‘Yesss, gimme that!’” The singer is unapologetic about setting her career sights high. “I’m a big advocate of going after what you want in general, and those things — a Grammy, mainstream success — are genuinely what I want,” she’s said. Currently, Tinashe is putting the final touches on her long-simmering second studio album, Joyride, which is finally due to debut this fall. Tinashe wants the new album to demonstrate just how multifaceted she can be as an artist. “It’s definitely become a process trying to convince people that yes, I am creative but I can be accessible, and I can be cool,” she’s said. “It’s very rare that people are able to be all of those things. But I am.”
