JUICE WRLD: FLYING HIGH

The Tragic Loss + His Most Moving Tracks

The breakout rap star Juice WRLD was announced dead at age 21 last week to the shock and sorrow of so many. One of several recent hip-hop artists who brought new emotion to the genre in recent years, he combined sorrowful lyrics with trap beats to make music that made us feel something entirely new.

His tragic passing is yet another heartbreaking example of ways in which young men and music are struggling with something we don’t fully comprehend. After the recent losses of other young rising stars like Lil Peep and XXXtentacion, we must ask ourselves if the industry is somehow failing to protect its young men.

As we grapple with difficult questions and sad confusion, we might find some solace in listening to the work we fell in love with from the artists we’ve lost. Here are our five favorite Juice WRLD songs:

“Legends”

There’s a certain eeriness to Juice WRLD’s song “Legends” since his death. He alludes to the deaths of his fellow young hip-hop musicians before delivering these startling lines: “What’s the 27 club? / We ain’t making it past 21.”

“Lucid Dreams”

The song that first put the spotlight on Juice WRLD is still his most popular track today. It’s an angry heartbreak song like so many, but its rawness is refreshing, provoking powerful feelings with its lyrics.

“Lean Wit Me”

Juice WRLD marries the party lifestyle and mental instability in the lyrics of this track. It’s melodically different than much of his world, with a strong guitar presence and a darker tone to his vocals.

“All Girls Are the Same”

Juice WRLD has a bitterness on this track as he describes his attempts to drink away the pain of a broken heart.

“Robbery”

Juice WRLD had a way of evoking hurt with the tone of his voice alone, but the sorrowful lyrics in this song take it to a new level. The drunken silliness of the “Robbery” music video contrasts starkly with the seriousness of the song’s emotion, adding layers of complexity to Juice WRLD’s character.
