An enchanting musician and fashion muse

Keep your eye on Kelsey Lu. Her haunting single, “Morning After Coffee,” above, is just the start. She’s an artist who does things her own way, and it shows in her work. Brought up in a strict Jehovah’s Witness household in Charlotte, North Carolina, Lu had to run away from her family in order to pursue her dream of having a career as a musician. “I left everything behind,” she says. Her first EP, Church, is so-named because she chose to record it live in a church, a nod to her past, but also a bold choice made because she liked her music best when performed for a live audience. Produced with the help of Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly, the results are magical—“Morning After Coffee” is just one of the six unique songs featured.

Tastemakers are taking notice of Kelsey Lu, too. In addition to Patrick Wimberly, other high profile collaborators include Blood Orange, Caroline Polachek, Okay-Kaya, Kelala and Devonté Hynes. Next, Lu will appear alongside in Kenzo’s Spring/Summer 2017 editorial campaign and she’ll star in the Kenzo short film “Music is My Mistress,” written and directed by Kahlil Joseph (a key force behind Beyoncé’s Lemonade). In the meantime, enjoy the gorgeous video for “Morning After Coffee,” shown above.
