L.A. LOVES Starcrawler

Straight Outta Los Angeles Comes a Hot Band

BY: Rudie Obias

Los Angeles hottest new rock band is Starcrawler, a very young and energetic Rock and Roll band with an infectious sound and a retro glam style. The band is fronted by 18-year-old Arrow de Wilde, a tall and leggy ball of energy who seems to be the love child of Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and British singer/songwriter P.J. Harvey. But in reality, she’s the daughter of famed photographer Autumn de Wilde and Beachwood Sparks/Father John Misty drummer Aaron Sperske.

Starcrawler’s upcoming self-titled debut hits record stores at the beginning of 2018, but take a look at the band’s new music video for the single “I Love LA,” directed by Arrow’s mother. The video features the band working at a doughnut shop, which are a staple of Los Angeles. It seems that every corner of the city has a doughnut shop that also offers Chinese food. To escape the humdrum work life, Starcrawler members pick up their instruments and completely rock out to the batty sex appeal of 70s Glam Rock with a 90s post-punk style.

Arrow de Wilde is ferocious, as she channels the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Joan Jett. The band opts to immerse themselves in bands from the 1970s instead of today because they consider them “boring” nowadays.

They prefer to look to the past, “You’d wonder what [rock stars] would do backstage, what they were like,” de Wilde said to LA Weekly. “Now [bands] don’t seem any higher than you. There’s no mystery.” Guitarist Henri Cash chimed in, “The Beatles and Ramones had a uniform. Now bands are just hipsters in hats with guitars.”

It’s true! Starcrawler seems like a band from another time playing music from another era that somehow fits in today’s rock music world. Their sound also seems to fit a certain LA art rock glam style and sound from bands like The Regrettes and Lemon Twigs. I don’t know about you, but this band makes me “love LA” too.

Starcrawler’s debut drops on January 18, 2018 on iTunes and Spotify and wherever albums are sold.
