Gaga: “Perfect Illusion”

The Lady sings about a break-up

“Perfect Illusion” is the totally rocked-out lead single from Lady Gaga’s upcoming fifth studio album, Joanna. Some critics have found a hint of Bruce Springsteen in the track, which harks back to the dance-pop rawness of Gaga’s earlier years. Gaga herself told British radio that the lyrics are about the sour feelings of a breakup and a critique of social media: “There are also a lot of things on the internet that are not reality. And I think people are pressured to keep that personal illusion going on in their real lives. So this song is about raging against it and letting it go. It’s about wanting people to re-establish that human connection.”

Here is the just-released music video, shot in the desert outside Los Angeles and directed by Ruth Hogben and Andrea Gelardin (of Lobster Eye). Gaga’s longtime collaborator Brandon Maxwell did the fashion style for the production. The song was written and produced by Gaga, Kevin Parker and Mark Ronson, with BloodPop lending a producing hand. Parker, Ronson and BloodPop make cameo appearances.
