Lana Del Rey is our favorite dreamy alt-pop star. She channels all the beauty and sultry vintage flair of an entertainer from decades ago. She’s a brilliant lyricist with a silky smooth voice. And now she’s a published poet.

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass, Lana Del Rey’s first published book of poetry, collects more than 30 individual poems. Reviewers have given the book mixed reviews, but all have generally agreed that it aligns precisely with the 1950s-styled heartbreak aesthetic she’s cultivated through her music.

The hardcover print version came out in late September, but Lana recorded a 40-minute audiobook before that. She reads a selection of poems as Jack Antonoff accompanies her with twinkling piano music and a hint of jazzy saxophone.

Lana Del Rey has always been a kind of artistic visionary, pushing modern music boundaries and defying expectations at every turn. Her breakthrough came in 2012 with the release of her sophomore album Born to Die, which Billboard called one of the decade’s best albums. She’s released four more albums since, captivating fans all over the world every step of the way. Her seventh album, Chemtrails Over the Country Club, is scheduled for release in the coming months.

The release of Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is just another example of Lana Del Rey’s commitment to artistic expression. Like the book, she has generally received mixed reviews. While many love her musical and artistic style, others have criticized her for being unchanging and overly romantic. But Lana hasn’t cared. She’s pushed on, releasing album after album and defending her style in controversial Instagram posts.
