Madonna’s “Medellín”

The Queen of Pop is back with a killer colab

After four years of quiet, the Queen of Pop is back and louder than ever.

April 17 brought the release of Madonna’s first single for her fourteenth studio album Madame X. The reggaeton-influenced track is titled “Medellín,” after a city in Columbia, and features Colombian singer Maluma. It’s a dreamy blend of English and Spanish and tells a dreamy tale of traveling in a dream to young and carefree days in the sun.

In “Medellín,” Madonna flirts with the rapidly growing appeal of world music in contemporary pop while also sticking to what she’s done best for the past three decades. The danceable track begins with a seductively whispered “1-2-cha cha cha” and ends the same way, enticing listeners to listen closely and keep the track on repeat. Madonna and Maluma’s chemistry can be easily heard in their sexy call-and-response vocals, and the music video Madonna has been teasing on her Instagram implies there’s more fun to come.

Madonna’s newest work shows she’s self-aware of her age, but also of her legacy. She walked so artists like Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey and Halsey could run, and she won’t easily let us forget that. The world will be waiting anxiously for Madame X’s release on June 14.
