The new indie group Middle Kids is one of the hottest upcoming acts coming out of Australia.

The trio got its start in 2016 when the solo artists Hannah Joy and Tim Fitz met and determined they’d be better together. Soon after, lead vocalist and guitarist Joy enlisted her school friend and drummer Harry Day to record its first song. The three have stuck together ever since.

Middle Kids’ first single, “Edge of Town,” immediately caught the Australian music world’s attention. The groovy alt-rock track’s release led to Rolling Stone Australia’s feature, the video played on Stereogum and Elton John’s Apple Music radio show.

The band released its first EP in 2017 and followed it up with its debut album Lost Friends in 2018. The album was a homemade masterpiece, recorded primarily at its Sydney residence and produced by bassist Fitz. It debuted at number 10 on the Australian chart and received an ARIA Award nomination and other accolades.

It wasn’t long before Middle Kids made their way across the pond to the United States. The group performed on multiple late-night shows like Conan and Jimmy Kimmel Live! They embarked on an American tour and made appearances at several of the country’s biggest festivals, including Lollapalooza, South by Southwest, and Governors Ball.

Early this year, Middle Kids announced that its highly anticipated sophomore album is on the way. Titled Today We’re the Greatest, two singles from the record have dropped so far. The first, “R U 4 ME?” is a happy tune, but its lyrics cut to the core of some of life’s difficult inquiries. The second single, “Questions,” came with the album announcement. Its wistful sound turns big and bold during the chorus, full of brass, big guitar chords, and crashing drums. If these songs are good indicators of what else is to come, Middle Kids’ new album is sure to be a delight.

Today We’re the Greatest is scheduled to drop on March 19, 2021.
