This will give you an idea about how controversially erotic the “Justify My Love” video was: When it was released in 1990 it didn’t debut on VH1 or MTV,  it was screened during a segment of the late night news show Nightline. After MTV refused to air the video because of its explicit nature—it contains nudity as well as suggestions of sadomasochism and group sex— Madonna went on Nightline to stand up for her artistic vision. When the host asked her why she submitted a video to MTV knowing that the network had rules against broadcasting nudity, the singer slyly defended herself while giving viewers incentive to watch yet another of her videos. “When I did my ‘Vogue’ video [for MTV],” said Madonna. “I’m wearing a see-through dress and you can clearly see my breasts.”
