MUSIC’S MENTAL STATE
Billie Eilish, Juice WRLD, Bebe Rexha

Spotify’s TikTok top hits include iconic stars like Billie Eilish and Juice WRLD. The music scene is erupting with unknown talent that is releasing provocative lyrics and music plus offering us terrific performances. Ellish’s brooding words and Juice WRLD’s ethereal sounds are creating new trends in radio.
Artists are now more open about their personal lives. Billie Eilish revealed she has Tourette’s Syndrome and Bebe Rexha admitted she is bipolar, just two examples of how an artist’s experiences become public knowledge. Bebe Rexha recently told USA TODAY, “I felt lows that made me not want to leave my house or be around people and I felt highs that wouldn’t let me sleep wouldn’t let me stop working or creating music. Now I know why.”

Many artists feel that personal experience and any dark origins of their creativity may be linked. Examples include Rexha’s, “I’m A Mess,” or “Cute But Psycho” from East Love and “Hate Me” by Elle Golding and the late artist Juice WRLD. Juice WRLD openly spoke about mental health issues before his tragic passing earlier this year.
It appears that torment is topping the charts. With so much music coming from these artists, it will be interesting to see where the combination of mental health and music will lead. Have we discovered the nucleus of genius? Will more mental health patients reach out for help because of Bebe Rexha and her music? TikTok is full of songs that echo sorrow but celebrate creativity. It will be exciting to see what emerges from this trend with cerebral roots.
