Prince’s Own Manic Monday
His Writing Reached Far Beyond Himself

The pop landscape of the 1980s would’ve been far different had it not been for Prince.
His innovation in sound and songwriting changed the industry and shaped the legacy of a genre forever. Clad in leather pants and a high white collar, he fearlessly gave the world Purple Rain in 1984, which features some of his most well-loved and successful hits.
But Prince’s ingenious creativity lent itself to artists other than himself, too. He penned songs for a number of other superstars during his prolific career, including Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Stevie Nicks and more.
Perhaps one of his most famous songwriting credits is found on The Bangles’ hit “Manic Monday.” The song performed by the all-women rock group peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the charts in a number of countries around the world following its release in 1986.
The Prince Estate, an organization dedicated to sharing and preserving the Purple One’s legacy, recently shared a previously unreleased recording of Prince himself performing “Manic Monday.” It’s accompanied by archival footage of Prince’s rehearsals, in which his unmistakable talent and dance moves are on full display.
The video and recording are a glimpse we’re lucky to get into the past of the and wildly successful and talented star. As long as the Prince Estate is willing to share new looks at Prince’s life as an artist so many came to love, there will be an audience eager to learn more.
