Selena Gomez is entering new territory. The pop star has made serious moves in the past year, releasing her stunning album Rare and starting her beauty brand in 2020. Now, she’s working on another innovative new project –– a Spanish language album.

The first single from the album “De Una Vez” dropped somewhat unexpectedly on January 14. The song’s lyrics tell a story of resilience. Gomez explains that she’s overcome heartbreak by exploring her individuality. She’s stronger on her own, she proclaims.

The dreamy, vintage-inspired music video for “De Una Vez” shows Gomez dancing through a pastel-tinted home with a carefree attitude and flowers on her head. While she dances, a heart pendant fixated on her chest glows and pulsates. At the end of the video, dark metallic armor folds itself around her heart, keeping it healed and protected.

Musically, the song is a delicate electro-pop track with a groovy Latin beat. It sonically embodies Gomez’s pop princess vibe perfectly and adds the perfect sprinkle of Latin flare. Happy listeners can thank producer Tainy, a Regeatton icon who frequently collaborates with Spanish speaking superstars like J-Balvin and Bad Bunny.

Gomez, whose father is of Mexican descent, has released Spanish music before. She dropped her hit collaborative single “Taki Taki” with Cardi B, DJ Snake, and Ozuna in 2018. She’s also been hinting at releasing a Spanish album for about ten years now.

But in an interview in early January, Gomez finally seemed to confirm that a complete Spanish record is in the works. No name or date has yet, but another single, “Baila Conmigo,” has also been teased via promotional murals lately.

We’ll be watching and waiting for Selena’s next spicy move.
