Three Netflix series with killer soundtracks
Netflix originals seem to keep getting better and better –– and so does the music they’re set to. The streaming platform is getting experimental both on-screen and with its series’ accompanying soundtracks, making some of Netflix’s latest work is as enjoyable to listen to as it is to watch.
Here are three of Netflix’s newest original series worth watching and listening to for their exceptional soundtracks, and a playlist of some of the best songs from each.
Russian Doll
In this dramedy, Emmy-nominated Natasha Lyonne of Orange Is the New Black fame plays Nadia, who is stuck living the same day over and over and getting murdered each evening. The soundtrack to Russian Doll is playful and upbeat, mixing some old-school inspired beats with new-age electronic tunes. John Maus’ “Cop Killer” has a distinctly David Bowie sound, while up-and-coming EDM producer French Coq adds three eerie, futuristic tracks to the collection. It’s a fun mix of high-energy tunes to fuel the hilarious escapades that Lyonne embarks on to save herself from another day and another death.
The Umbrella Academy
It’s not a My Chemical Romance reunion, but it’ll touch your emo heart anyway –– Gerard Way’s comic series has finally been brought to the screen. The Umbrella Academy follows a family of superheroes brought together in childhood and given the responsibility of saving the world as adults. The sound track is a surprising mix of carefully selected classics like Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” and more modern tracks like Woodkid’s “Run Boy Run.” Of course there are also some Way originals included, like guitar-heavy “Hazy Shade of Winter.” It’s a diverse collection of rock-n-roll that perfectly encapsulates the varying personalities of the show’s seven heroes.
Turn Up Charlie
Yes, Idris Elba is a DJ, both in real life (he’s performing at Coachella!) and now on-screen. His two artistic careers collide in the newly released Turn Up Charlie, in which he stars as a washed up DJ-turned-nanny looking for a second chance at success. The soundtrack to the comedy series is, obviously, EDM-heavy and includes five tracks featuring Elba himself. It also includes tracks by other notable EDM and pop artists like Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa and Jess Glynne. The collection keeps to the show’s theme by including plenty of electronic songs, but smoothly blends in other genres to create a fun and danceable soundtrack.
