In an emotional post made to Mac Miller’s Instagram account last week, the late rapper’s family announced that the world would get another unexpected taste of new music from the beloved rapper.

Malcolm McCormick’s tragic passing in 2018 broke the hearts of so many who saw the young artist as a visionary. Now, more than a year after his death, Mac’s unfinished work will be released to the public, thanks to his loved ones and the dedicated work of producer Jon Brion.

The Instagram post explained the album, titled Circles, is meant to complement Mac Miller’s last album Swimming, which he released just a month before his passing. Swimming was an eclectic blend of synth-infused hip-hop with a melancholy, soulful feel.

The first track from Circles was released just last week, and is both lyrically and stylistically divergent from previous albums but somehow still complementary. “Good News” is a cool, musing song that juxtaposes the hopeful and the sad. It sounds like Mac is musically shrugging his shoulders, giving his fans a private, understanding smile. “There’s a whole lot more for me waitin’ on the other side,” he promises.

A music video accompanied the release of “Good News.” Beginning and ending with short clips of Mac Miller in the studio, it takes us on a trippy journey through oceans and deserts, with intermittent shots of Mac posing and performing.

Circles is scheduled to be released this Friday, Jan. 17. A three-day immersive listening experience will also happen in Los Angeles beginning the same day. The exhibition is free and open to the public, but exclusive merch will also be available, the proceeds from which will go to the Mac Miller Fund. The charity has raised more than $1 million in the past year for underserved communities and young artists struggling with addiction.
