Born Sydney Bennett, Syd Tha Kyd, 24, is a chill, gay performer/songwriter best known as a member of the alterna-hip-hop collective Odd Feature and the lead singer for the soul band the Internet. Her debut solo album, Fin, released in February, has 12 smooth, slick songs referencing genres from hip-hop to R&B. The video of her single, “All About Me”, is a moody, indigo blue film shot in a warehouse featuring the androgynous Syd singing, “Take care of the family that you came with, we made it this far and it’s amazing/People drowning all around me/So I keep my squad around me,” while surrounded by her musical homeys including Tyler, the Creator and Mike G. A reference to her musical past and a nod to her future, perhaps?
