For their ninth album, Tegan and Sara decided to go back to the beginning.

Hey, I’m Just Like You, which was released in early October, is a revisitation of some of the twin sisters’ earliest songwriting. After coming across some old-school recordings of their first original works, Tegan and Sara decided to revamp the songs from their teenage years.

Now nearing 40 years old, Tegan and Sara have had a long career, taking them from their Canadian hometown and their rock and roll inspirations like Green Day and Nirvana to playing supersized shows as a supporting act for Taylor Swift. Listening to Hey, I’m Just Like You through the lens of their decades-long journey through the industry is a nostalgic delight.

The 12-track album opens with a highlight. “Hold My Breath Until I Die” is wonderfully composed from lyrics, instrumentation, to the delicate balance of the two sisters’ voices. Other highlights include “I’ll Be Back Someday,” a quintessentially late 90’s rock song that seems to belong in a rom-com starring Lindsay Lohan or Amanda Bynes during their hey-days.

The songs are youthful in lyrics but so very grown-up in sound. As clearly as the music is informed by the past, the album is thoroughly modern, blending the numerous genres the two have explored during the past 20 years.

In addition to a brilliant album, Tegan and Sara also released a co-authored memoir alongside it. High School explores their formative years as musicians and as people, chronicling their shared and different experiences. Reviewers are raving about their hilarious tales of cringeworthy teen moments.
