The Accidentals Breakout
This Alt-Folk Trio Will Never Be Earthbound
Hailing from Traverse City, Michigan, The Accidentals blends elements of indie folk, pop, and bluegrass into one fresh sound that screams for adventure and exploration. Multi-instrumentalists Savannah Buist and Katie Larson joined forces in high school and later added percussionist Michael Dause after graduation. But now, the band is positioned to breakout into the mainstream with their latest album (their third, but first major label release) Odyssey and their new single “Earthbound.”
The music video for the new single finds the band inside of an abandoned warehouse where they fill its empty hallways and rooms with a larger-than-life melody and passion. What makes their style and music interesting is their sense of melding alt-folk and bluegrass genres with orchestral arrangements that’s sweeping and loose that feels really free. It’s reminiscent of Suzanne Vega or Kaki King mixed with Mumford & Sons.
Influences aside, The Accidentals have a sound beyond their years instead of a trio in their early 20s. There seems to be a breadth of experience, both musically and lyrically, which has a feeling of finesse and fun. “Earthbound” feels dream-like, as the trio speaks out against being tied down creatively with lyrics like “I’m a switchblade renegade, I’m not stand up, I’ve got lies down/To the core, I’m a carnivore, I will never be earthbound.”
The Accidentals are currently on tour throughout the Midwest and West Coast, while Odyssey is available now on Spotify and Apple Music.
