The Best of PJ Harvey
The singer’s 5 most provocative music videos

British singer-songwriter PJ Harvey—who was named Rolling Stone‘s Best New Artist way back in 1992—is notoriously publicity shy, but during the run-up to the release of her latest album, The Hope Six Demolition Project, Harvey let her creative process unfold live in front of an audience. She and her band recorded the album behind a one-way glass as spectators looked on. The politically minded album is based on research trips to Afghanistan, Kosovo and Washington, D.C., that Harvey took with photographer Seamus Murphy. The track, “Community of Hope,” for example, is based on a tour Harvey and Murphy took of Anacostia, an impoverished, crime-addled D.C. neighborhood. The music video for the song (see below) includes footage of that tour. While the other four videos may not be quite as politically charged, they still showcase Harvey’s ability to be alluring, provocative and an ethereal musician.
