The New Pornographers

Canada's Cool Indie Rock Collective

The New Pornographers aren’t a band –– they’re a musical collective. Think Brockhampton, but they’ve been around a lot longer. The original group of singers, songwriters and other musicians first joined forces in 1997. Since then, the New Pornographers’ cast of characters has included 11 different musicians, all Canadian.

The group’s sound is as eclectic as it promises, but in the best possible way. Every song blends voices, sounds and styles in a way that demonstrates care and artistry. It’s likely they call themselves an indie group because there simply isn’t another genre that can encapsulate their innovative sound, a blend of acoustic and electric elements inspired by everything from folk to funk.

The New Pornographers released their first album, Mass Romantic, in 2000 and immediately caught the attention of the music world. Their sophomore record Electric Vision put the group on the charts for the first time, and it was later named to Rolling Stones list of the “100 Best Albums of the Decade.” Their five following releases have climbed in the U.S. charts. The group will release a new album on September 27 titled In the Morse Code of Brake Lights.

The New Pornographers released their first single from In the Morse Code of Brake Lights late last month. “Falling Down the Stairs of Your Smile” is a happy, funky tune with a healthy bass line and electric piano rhythm. The blend of the group members’ voices, male and female, in the chorus give it a polished multidimensional element with just a hint of rock and roll.
