Swedish pop star Tove Lo’s new single “Cool Girl”—the first release from her upcoming sophomore album— was inspired by a scene from the movie Gone Girl in which the main character talks about how she faked being a cool girl simply to please her husband. “I was thinking about it, and it’s really true,” the singer told Rolling Stone. “Why do we try to be someone we’re not to make someone love us? Would you want to fake yourself for the rest of your life? That’s fucked up.” It’s a decidedly downbeat topic, but the song is high-energy and the video is scorching.
