WAITING FOR COACHELLA?

Listen To Our Favorite Top 10 Performers

BY: Alexis Eichelberger

Live events are now canceled around the world to combat the global coronavirus pandemic. The biggest music festival of the year, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, has been moved from its traditional early spring dates to October.

You might be disappointed you’ll have to wait to watch your favorite acts in the desert (or live vicariously through live streams and Instagram posts). But don’t be discouraged. In the meantime, here are ten artists from the lineup to listen to while you wait:

Frank Ocean

We all went wild when we found out music’s most elusive visionary would play his first live show since the summer of 2017 on the Coachella stage. It’s hard to predict what songs Frank Ocean will perform, but now we’ve got some extra time to dream up our perfect setlist.

We recommend listening to Nikes.”

Bishop Briggs

The British indie rocker started turning heads in 2016 when her breakthrough single “River” rocketed up the alternative charts. Bishop Briggs released her sophomore album Champion last year, and her Coachella performance should be a jumping-off point for her career to reach new heights in 2020.

We recommend listening to White Flag.”

DaBaby

DaBaby has been a hot up-and-coming rapper since signing with Interscope Records last year. His first successful single, “Suge,” reached the top 10 in the Billboard Hot 100 in June 2019. He’s since been featured on tracks by Post Malone, Camila Cabello and Megan Thee Stallion and started a viral internet dance trend with the music video for his track “BOP.”

We recommend listening to VIBEZ.”

Orville Peck

His fringed Lone Ranger mask is iconic among the cult fan base he’s developed since releasing his debut album in March 2019. The Canadian country crooner goes by Orville Peck on stage, but his actual name and identity remain unknown. We want to see what a performance from him on a stage as big this looks like.

We recommend listening to Queen of the Rodeo.”

Marina

Marina and the Diamonds officially rebranded to a mononym last year. As much as we loved her 2012 bop “How to Be a Heartbreaker,” we adore her latest work. She released her first album, Marina, in 2019 and released a single earlier this year as part of the soundtrack for the Netflix rom-com To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You.

We recommend listening to Orange Trees.”

100 gecs

This wacky experimental duo made one of the most polarizing debut records of 2019. But love it or hate it, 100 gecs unique brand of electronica is taking off. It scored them a remix of their track “Ringtone” with features by Charli XCX and Rico Nasty.  They were the opening act on BROCKHAMPTON’s tour last year.

We recommend listening tomoney machine.”

BROCKHAMPTON

The revolutionary rap collective has been one of the most prolific groups in recent years. BROCKHAMPTON released its fifth studio album Ginger last year and released its first Billboard charting hit, “Sugar.” The group performed on some of TV’s biggest stages last year, including Ellen and Jimmy Kimmel Live! But Coachella will undoubtedly be their most significant live performance to date.

We recommend listening to NO HALO.”

Summer Walker

The work of this young R&B powerhouse is so silky smooth; we know she has big things ahead. Summer Walker released her debut album Over It in 2019 and captivated us with her dreamy, sexy voice. In a genre crowded with talented voices, she stands out.

We recommend listening to Tonight.”

beabadoobee

At only 19 years old, Beatrice Kristi Laus has already attracted a following with her individualistic alt-rock style. Known professionally as beabadoobee, she’s opening for The 1975 on the UK leg of its current tour. She recently became a TikTok phenomenon by proxy through her feature on the Powfu track “death bed.”

We recommend listening to The Moon Song.”

Roddy Ricch

Finally, there’s the rap phenom who’s been sitting solidly at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks now. “The Box” skyrocketed up the charts when Roddy Ricch‘s full-length studio debut Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial dropped in December 2019. It only seemed right to include him in the Coachella lineup and on our list of artists to watch.

We recommend listening to Start Wit Me (feat. Gunna).”
