André Kertész
Mirroring Life at Foam, Amsterdam
André Kertész (1894-1985) is the renowned photographer who is recognized for his considerable contribution to the visual language of the 20th-century photography with his poetic work. At an early age, he was drawn to photography from images in magazines and purchased his first camera with his first paycheck in 1912. A retrospective of over 200 images is on display, entitled Mirroring Life, offering a chronological overview of Kertész’ 70 year artistic adventure. Some work has rarely been displayed or published. The unique eyes of the poet are on full display and truly celebrated in this collection.
Despite a variety of times and places the poetic commitment of André Kertész is revealed and flourishes in this exhibit. The wonderful curation examines his early work in his homeland of Hungary, his time in Paris – where between 1925 and 1936 he was a leading figure in avant-garde photography – through to New York, where he lived and worked for fifty years. It is an homage to the photographer whom Henri Cartier-Bresson viewed as his mentor. It is a feast for the eyes and the soul.
The exhibit is organized with Jeu de Paume, Paris in collaboration with la mediatheque d l’architecture et du Patrimoine, Ministere de la Culture et de la Communication – France and di Chroma Photography.
