A true visual mastery, Cayetano González’s photography is the culmination of good light, ethereal subjects, and tangible romance. Melancholy in its soft and airy hues, the work is reminiscent of the long-gone European painters in which González finds inspiration. They include Delacroix, Velázquez, and Rembrandt. With modernity and multiplicity expertly entangled, González captures a diverse set of subjects and emanates a contemporary sense of mystique.

Born under a lineage of artists, González’s knack for the craft was inherent; his initiation with a camera instinctively natural. Before settling into his real profession, he first tried his hand at videography. The results proved unsatisfying, and eventually, he was given his first film camera from his grandfather — a Leica. It was with this tool that he found the path to his calling.

González spoke with PROVOKR on his methods of photographing, citing the importance of prepping for a shot. “I always say I take the picture before the shoot,” he notes. “That doesn’t mean I don’t improvise, but having the right ingredients is definitely a great start for a great dish.”

In 2016, González began a project dedicated to natural light, determined to master the trade rules and techniques after working mainly with artificial light. The switch was well-founded, and the photographic products have since established the cornerstones of his expansive oeuvre.

“When I started the [about light] project, I had a lot of references and ideas from painters whom I admire,” comments González when reflecting on his subjects. “Most of these references that I liked were moody female portraits … I now have more access to different types of models, so I’m currently searching for different faces and bodies without any gender or race limits.”

While contemplating the influence of his photography, González delved into the deeper crevices of his occupation. “I believe art is much more powerful than what we can imagine,” he remarks. “As technology evolves we will slowly begin to see and understand how complex and important it is. I find myself at the beginning of something I can’t yet understand … What I can say, is that as a visual creator, I know I have a responsibility within society … The stories I create might change, but I’d hope to impact my viewers while being conscious, mindful, and humane.”
