In the exhibition titled “Dream States: Contemporary Photographs and Video,” New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art showcased artists whose work evokes “the experience of a waking dream.” Some of the works that were on display focused on the otherworldly quality of dreaming—such as Adam Fuss’s My Ghost photo—while others were more firmly planted in reality. A photo by Sophie Calle, for instance, was from a series she did in which she photographed her friends while they slept in her bed. Here are some of the compelling photographs that were on display at the exhibit, which ran last summer and fall.
