Summer in the City
Roberta Bayley Curates 72 Gallery

Hell’s Kitchen, along with the rest of New York, is never so hellish as in the middle of the summer. As a relief from the scorching air slinking along every sidewalk, renowned photographer Roberta Bayley curated “Summer and Smoke,” a show for the 72 Gallery which opened on Thursday, July 18. The show presents a glimpse at how the original punk set handled the heat–on beaches, by pools, and wherever they could wear as little as possible.
The photographs are a melange of color prints and black and white pieces, all bearing the signature behind-the-scenes feel of Bayley’s tastes. There’s a raw intimacy to them which is rarely associated with such bristly musicians. They remind us that no matter how much you fight capitalism, the patriarchy, the government as a whole, or the demons in your head, sometimes the best medicine is some sunshine, some salt water, and some sand.
Check out these pieces from the show. We think you’ll find them as refreshing as we do. 72 Gallery is located at 72 Orchard Street in NYC. The hours are from 12 p.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday. “Summer in Smoke” photo exhibition runs through August 22.
