On July 12, the Met Breuer is launching Diane Arbus: In the Beginning, an exhibition that focuses on the first seven years (1956-1962) of the legendary photographer’s career. Featuring more than 100 photographs—the majority of which have never before been published or exhibited—the show provides a glimpse into how Arbus developed her trademark style of capturing intimate portraits of people on the margins of society. “She brings us face-to-face with what she had first glimpsed at the age of 16—‘the divineness in ordinary things’” says Jeff Rosenheim, the curator of museum’s photography department. Or as Arbus herself once said, “I really believe there are things which nobody would see unless I photographed them.”
