Best Job Ever
Game of Thrones photographer, Helen Sloan

Helen Sloan has been the official photographer for Game of Thrones since the beginning. She says there’s no such thing as a normal day on the set. “One day we are shooting an exploding ice wall, the next the interior of a brothel,” remarks the Irish-born photographer. Which helps quite a bit if you are working early in the morning until very late at night. She shoots on location and behind the scenes footage, and has a studio in which she can shoot portraits or other more controlled work. She edits the film and tags them with identifying information. Her only breaks come during nude scenes which HBO does not shoot for publicity…which is a real loss for PROVOKR.
Sloan started shooting when she was eleven and became inseparable from the camera while growing up in Ireland. She started her career taking photos of circus performers, which she says was perfect training for working in the film world, as it involves working with creative performers. Sloan was asked to submit a portfolio for the role of set photographer for a new series being filmed five minutes from her Belfast home. She got the job and the rest is Game of Thrones history.
On twitter you can find the photographer asking the media not to lighten/darken or adjust her images as they are intended to be dark. We think they are magnificent just the way they are. They have become a crucial ingredient to the entire show. She also recently tweeted from the premiere of Season 7 in Los Angeles that the cast and crew were very emotional. We cannot wait.
