Tyler Shields
Images both bright and dark at the same time

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1982, L.A.–based photographer and filmmaker Tyler Shields produces deliberately unsettling images that play with the viewer’s expectations and iconography, particularly when it comes to celebrity. “There are going to be people who don’t like things that you do, and that doesn’t matter,” Shields told The Hollywood Reporter. “As much as I don’t make sense to them, they don’t make sense to me. And I think that’s awesome. I think it’s awesome if something can be polarizing.” Shields’s output includes the monographs The Dirty Side of Glamour (2013) and Provocateur, coming out this December; a solo show at the Miller Gallery, Cincinnati (2012); and the film Final Girl (2015), with Abigail Breslin and Wes Bentley, which he directed. Here is a PROVOKR selection of his work.
