Nick Knight Does Billie Eilish, Tom Ford, Gareth Pugh+
Famed British photographer, Nick Knight, is known for pushing the boundaries of his craft. As a fashion photographer, he has collaborated with clients such as Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and many more. His work has been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Tate Modern, Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
In 2016 Knight was commissioned by Buckingham Palace to shoot the portrait of The Queen and her son Prince Charles to commemorate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. But his creative genius goes beyond photography. Knight has been the creative force behind the music videos of David Bowie, Kanye West, Bjork, and Lady Gaga. “We were struggling to put the tour together so quickly, and we wanted to do something very video-driven and very interactive, and I thought if I am going to do a video-based show I need someone who can create videos and visuals who is really a genius,” Lady Gaga said in an interview with Vogue Hommes Japan. “So I just called Nick and said, ‘I’m in trouble. I need to phone God to help me get all this done in time. So naturally, I called God, I called Nick Knight.” He also directed the video for Lady Gaga’s single Born This Way.
In 2000, Knight founded the fashion website SHOWstudio.com, a platform developed to showcase fashion film. Knight explains that fashion designers create clothing to be seen in movement, and every angle is essential to the design. Not only does SHOWstudio embrace the designer’s vision in a film medium, but SHOWstudio has also pioneered the trend of documenting the process at various stages.” It’s always important to allow people to see how things are made to allow people to see the process, then you understand the art better.”
Knight’s Instagram has more than 700 thousand followers and exhibits his passion for fashion film and the ever-evolving world of image-making. Knight dismisses the claim that images made using iPhones and apps are “not proper photography.” “It’s a new medium, he says, “and I feel strongly that we have to embrace it.” It is clear Knight does not cling to the old way of doing things.
