Behind the scenes of The Girlfriend Experience
Steven Soderbergh, who first established his indie filmmaking cred (and his knack for capturing the zeitgeist) with 1989’s Sex, Lies and Videotape, is turning his 2009 film The Girlfriend Experience into a 13-part anthology series for Starz debuting April 10. The Girlfriend Experience stars Riley Keough (The Runaways, Magic Mike XXL) as one of the women—known in the trade as GFEs—who provide their clients both physical and emotional comfort, making them part sex worker and part rent-a-spouse. “Many of these women are extremely accomplished,” said Philip Fleishman, who executive produces the show along with Soderbergh. “They range from musicians in major orchestras to PhD candidates in the sciences and often feel empowered by the control and economic freedom their work as GFEs affords them.” The down side, of course, is that navigating these murky relationships can lead to all sorts of drama.
