Everyone knows about the Captain Americas and Thors, but there are plenty of superheroes and their entourages who aren’t the cookie-cutter type. They have grit and are not afraid to skirt the rules. They’re atypical superheroes.

THE BOYS

In the world of The Boys, superheroes are monetized and marketed for personal gain. Kind of sounds like Captain America propaganda, doesn’t it? The Amazon series follows two groups, one is The Boys. They’re a group of vigilantes out to keep the Seven superheroes under control. Season two of the hit show drops on the platform September 4, so it’s time to catch up on the show.

THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY

Season two of The Umbrella Academy is all the rage right now. Starring Ellen Page, Tom Hopper and others, the series brings together former child superheroes who must reunite to fight the impending apocalypse. No big deal, right? Check out the trailer for season one of the Netflix series below.

WATCHMEN

Regina King leads this group of vigilantes in this allegorical series. The Watchmen are tapped to investigate and take down a white supremacist group. The HBO series earned itself a whopping 23 Primetime Emmy nominations, and it may take home a great deal. Watch it before it wins.

JESSICA JONES

Marvel isn’t devoid of grit and raunch. Breaking Bad’s Krysten Ritter stars as the titular character who used to be a superhero. Now, she fights crime as a kickass private detective. The series ran for three seasons on Netflix, and it’s worth a weekend binge.

LUKE CAGE

Jessica Jones meets up — and hooks up — with another superhero: Luke Cage. Mike Colter plays the ripped, title superhero in New York City’s Harlem. When he is experimented on and develops superpowers, he gets pulled into the city’s crime. That forces him to confront his past as never before. Luke Cage is also available on Netflix.

DOOM PATROL

Even misfits need their group of superheroes. When six people suffer horrible accidents that disfigure them but cause superhuman capabilities, a scientist takes them in. The ragtag squad finds confidence in themselves to defeat otherworldly powers. Season two dropped on HBO Max in June.
