B.J. Novak’s The Premise

Lucas Hedges & Kaitlyn Dever Are Among A Super Cast

In life, we experience many situations as both individuals and as a collective. Sometimes, it feels like our lives should be a movie–or a show. The Office’s B.J. Novak is taking this concept and making it a reality with his new show, The Premise (of course, he’s known for more than just The Office, but I’m still depressed it’s over, okay?).

The Premise is an anthology series that will air exclusively on FX on Hulu starting September 16. Each episode will revolve around a different real-life theme, including BLM, self-identity, social media, celebrities, sex, revenge, immigration issues, and love. All will come to life in standalone character-driven stories, so The Premise may be a genuine conversation starter.

It’s already apparent that the series will be a great one thanks to Ryan–I mean, B.J.–and his extraordinary creative mind, but the actors make the show even better. The cast includes Randal Gonzalez, Jon Bernthal, Ayo Edebiri, Lucas Hedges, Daniel Dae Kim, Lola Kirke, Kaitlyn Dever, Boyd Holbrook, Eric Lange, Tracee Ellis Ross, Soko, Jermaine Fowler, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ben Platt, George Wallace, Edward Asner, Denni Barrett, and Bryan Batt.

Novak said about the series: “I wrote these scripts and said, ‘These are stories about our time, the way I see them.’ It was really about, how do we tell the stories of our time by looking them in the eye and having fun with them?” He also said that he chose to illustrate these real issues through characters because he wanted to make the show more than just being about arguments or challenging times. Creating a person to attach to the issue makes it more honest and authentic. He also said that he chose to make the series anthology because today’s audiences have “short attention spans, but also a real desire for intensity and depth.”

It’ll be exciting to be able to watch things that happen in real life in front of our faces from a third-person perspective. Rather than just focusing on more minor issues or one big issue, Novak plans to dive into each topic that we face today–and with a cast as iconic as this one, it’s safe to say it’ll be worth the watch.
