When most think of socially conscious celebrities, they think of people like Colin Kapernick, Kendrick Lamar, and J. Cole, to name a few. However, Muhammad Ali belongs on the list too. Ali had a friendship with legendary civil rights activist Malcolm X during his career that blossomed into a brotherhood. This brotherhood is the subject of a new Netflix documentary titled Blood Brothers

Blood Brothers will focus on the connection between Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali and dive into the factors that caused it to fall apart. It features Malcolm X’s daughters, Ilyasah Shabazz, Reverend Al Sharpton, and philosopher Cornel West. The relationship was meaningful because Ali learned things from Malcolm. Maryum Ali, daughter of Muhammad Ali, said, “My father wanted to be great. There are things that Malcolm taught him that my father kept with him until his last day.”

It is not the first time the relationship between Ali and Malcolm X has been chronicled. The Epix series Godfather of Harlem has featured both men as characters and showed a fictionalized version of how they met. Both men also appeared as characters in the Amazon Prime film One Night in Miami. Again, a fictionalized version of Ali, Malcolm X, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke meeting to discuss the Civil Rights Movement.

After seeing fictional portrayals of their relationship, it will be good to see the true story of Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. Blood Brothers will be available to stream beginning on Netflix on September 9.
